10/15/09 – Typhoon Pepeng Recovery

We are thankful for God’s protection. Doane Rest weathered the latest typhoon well. We had a few minor leaks, some groundwater seepage in our workshop, and a few dead branches fell. After receiving almost 8 feet of precipitation in a week (4 times the normal monthly rainfall average!) other places around Baguio did not fare as well.

Devastating landslides destroyed communities and left Baguio City stranded as all roads were blocked coming into the city for nearly a week. Gas stations ran dry and basic necessities like eggs, bread, meat and vegetables were in scant supply. This potential food crisis is now past and we are pleased to report that the roads are now open again and the supply trucks have restocked the grocery stores.

For a few days after the storm, we hosted some “refugees” at Doane Rest…some of our guests and another honeymooning couple were stranded in Baguio. We also were able to share a spare generator with a family whose father lies in a coma. Landslides had taken out their electricity and they were concerned that their father might have need of a suction machine to assist his breathing.

One of our staff members was able to purchase some food supplies here in Baguio and deliver them to his home place in Dagupan which had been severely flooded during the storm. He and his wife were able to be a blessing to their neighbors as they opened their home as a “relief center” to distribute these relief goods to their friends and neighbors who were still waiting for government aid to arrive.

We are also trying to organize a medical relief team to assist some local church relief efforts in the area as well.

10/14/09 – Roads Cleared

Feel free to reschedule your vacations. The roads are now cleared and we are open for business.

10/10/09 – Baguio Isolated

Doane Rest is still here and we are all safe and sound, but due to the typhoon all roads accessing Baguio City have been blocked or destroyed by landslides. We would advise those of you with plans to come up to make other plans and try again in a week, as the roads should be open by then.

7/20/09 – Pest Control Day

No! We did not have an outbreak of rodents or cockroaches! This was a regularly scheduled, quarterly visit by JC Care Pest Control Systems to ensure that we don’t have problems in the future. They checked all the in-ground termite traps (no activity!), sprayed the cottages inside and out to prevent creepy-crawlies, and fogged the entire property to eliminate flying pests as well. They seemed very thorough and professional and we are glad for their services so we can maintain a clean, safe environment for our guests.

7/16/09 – Consumables Now Available

New attached imageYou’ve arrived late at Doane Rest and don’t really want to go down to the grocery store to pick up some food for breakfast because you’ve just spent 5 hrs on the road from Manila and you’re ready to finally relax!

We understand and have a solution for your dilemma! We now stock a small supply of basic necessities and other consumables (food, beverages and paper products), so you can relax when you get here and not feel like you need to go out shopping when you first arrive.

7/13/09 – Cottage Renovations Complete

After two weeks of renovations, our single bedroom apartment is now known as “The Honeymoon Cottage”. New floors, molding, and baseboards have been installed. Fresh paint brightens the interior, and photographs of tropical flowers and orchids are hung on the walls. A newer refrigerator and a new toaster oven have also been added; the furniture has been replaced and new curtains hung to finish the upgrade.

Today the guys brought back our newly recharged fire extinguishers and gave us a demonstration on how to use them. Not only was it fun for the kids to see, but also important for our staff to learn to use the fire extinguishers in the event of necessity.
